"I’ve studied at the University of Newcastle for several years, starting in the Bachelor of Social Science and later transferring into the Bachelor of Laws (Honours). I’ve been a part-time student while working, and overall my experience has been excellent. Most of the teaching staff across both programs are supportive, approachable, and genuinely care about their students. During COVID, they adapted quickly and kept things running smoothly, and more recently, after a motorbike accident, arrangements were made so I could continue studying from home. Having a reasonable adjustment plan in place made a huge difference, and staff were consistently understanding and flexible. Like any large university, there are the occasional less-than-ideal experiences, but the good far outweighs the bad. Many lecturers and tutors go above and beyond, often while juggling heavy workloads and limited pay. It’s such a shame they’re not better recognised or compensated for all the extra effort they put in, as they truly do it because they care about students’ success. It’s a welcoming environment for both younger and mature-aged students, and I’m grateful to have such a great local university here in the Hunter. Highly recommend studying here, just watch out for the mosquitoes if you’re at the Callaghan campus!"
"Two years of my life spent living in one of the best campuses in Australia, which offered great living conditions, is very welcoming of international students like myself, great staff, security, facilities and amenities. Gave you the feeling of a suburban lifestyle within a naturesque world. Love this campus and I miss living here so much!"
"For months they have been using new virtual parking permits while they kept their old signs saying permit to be displayed. It toke them ages to rectify the matter but during that, the uni was happy to issue fines to students for silly mistakes and they don't acknowledge they have done something wrong themselves. They issued fines for my son for silly mistake and state revenue declined the appeal , mislead by their in correct signage. The university didn't acknowledge their mistake, further they toke the matter to the court which waived the fines. (Before asking students to be strict by rules , you need to be following them yourself )."
"At first, I didn’t believe what people were saying about the University of Newcastle – that all they care about is money. I thought it was just students complaining. But now that I’m a student here, I honestly feel like those people were right. It seems like the university focuses more on making money than actually helping students. Sometimes it feels like they make things harder on purpose, just so students can fail and pay more fees. The support isn't great, and it’s easy to feel like you’re just a number, not a person. I expected a better experience, but now I can see why so many people warned me before I joined."
"Wonderful uni, only good university in the whole city. Staff are all very nice, place always has parking at least somewhere, lots of green space. All the classes have very high quality equipment which is kept to a high standard."
