"I am extremely disappointed with my experience with RAKEZ, and I would not recommend international investors to set up a business there. I moved to the UAE from Australia earlier last year with the intention of establishing my business. My wife had recently converted to Islam, and everything we heard about the UAE as a country welcoming entrepreneurs made us very excited to relocate and invest here. I approached a business setup company with a clear business plan, which I also submitted with my application. From the beginning, I clearly explained that I intended to live and operate my business in Dubai. Unfortunately, I was incorrectly advised to open my company through RAKEZ in Ras Al Khaimah. At the time, I had very little understanding of the difference between free zone and mainland business structures, and this was never properly explained to me. My application remained stuck with immigration for nearly three months, during which the setup company reportedly resubmitted the application four times. This raised serious concerns about whether they knew what they were doing. Eventually, the application was rejected, yet I was never formally informed by the company handling my setup. When I contacted them for answers, I was told to speak with someone from RAKEZ named Zain. Unfortunately, communication was extremely slow and unhelpful. I repeatedly asked for my application reference number, but it was never provided. In the end, I had to personally visit RAKEZ and request the document myself. I submitted multiple complaints to RAKEZ requesting assistance and asking to close the company that had been opened under my name, as I never received any benefit from it. Despite numerous attempts, I received very little support and was constantly redirected back to the setup company. This entire situation caused me significant stress and financial loss. Since arriving in the UAE without my Emirates ID, I had to rely on hotels, rental cars, and other expensive arrangements normally charged to tourists. In total, I have spent over AED 200,000 while dealing with this issue. When I asked for the login details and password to access my business account so I could close it, I was unable to obtain them. Eventually, the setup company verbally asked me to pay AED 10,000 just to close the business, which felt like taking advantage of the situation. I came to the UAE because I trusted its business system and reputation for supporting investors. I arrived with a genuine investment plan and serious intentions. Unfortunately, my experience with this process was very disappointing. On a positive note, after receiving advice from a local UAE resident, I opened a mainland company in Dubai, and the entire process including my visa and my family’s visas was completed in less than 10 days without any issues. My advice to new international investors is to fully understand the difference between free zones and mainland companies before starting the process, and ensure you work with trustworthy advisors. Sadly, this experience has been extremely stressful, and it is something I will never forget or forgive anyone who was involved in my case."
